Vocab Lesson, Part 1
Alice and I have been debating the meaning of irony for a while now. She gets very upset when people misuse the term. As a descriptive linguist-type, I maintain that irony has several new meanings and there's nothing you can do about it. Part of me wonders if Alice's definition is too rigid, as in, only dramatic irony receives the name in her book.
So in the effort to develop a comprehensive current etymology and definition of "irony," tell me what you think it means. I feel like playing linguist today.
