I am contemplating a move in the next year. As lovely as my current apartment is, it simply lacks the charm that many of the buildings in the central city have, and I am tired of living in ugly stucco two-story buildings with godawful slider windows and even worse carpeting. I came across an ad for a place nearby with hardwood floors, washer/dryer and a wood-burning stove (so cute!) and it listed two different rent prices, depending on whether one or two people lived there.
Is that legal? I've never heard of differential rent by occupancy rate, just by size and amenities, and perhaps extra rent for pets. But to charge $50 more per month just for an extra person, in a fairly spacious apartment doesn't seem kosher.
